Wild Black Currant (Ribes americanum) - Small, globular shrub, 3-6 ft. tall, with many slender stems. A native shrub species that grows from 3-6' tall with erect branches lacking spines, on multiple stems. The simple alternate leaves are one to three inches wide with 3 to 5 lobes. Small flowers open in spring and 5 white petals. The tubular flowers are visited by bumblebees which suck nectar and sweat bees which collect pollen.

Drooping racemes produce glossy, purple to black fruit (1/4-1/2") in late summer. The berries are smooth and contain many seeds. Ripe fruits are sweet and desirable for human consumption. They are commonly eaten by birds and small mammals through the fall season.
